Europe

Broadband and mobile across Europe

Each European country has its own mix of operators, but EU rules give every customer the same core rights: roaming like at home, contracts capped at 24 months and fast number porting.

Your rights under EU rules

  • Roam like at home: use your EU mobile plan in other EU/EEA countries at no extra charge, subject to fair use. The rules run until 2032.
  • Contract length: the initial commitment of a consumer contract can’t exceed 24 months.
  • Contract summary: providers must give you a short summary of the main terms before you sign.
  • Number porting: your number should move within one working day of the agreed date.

Country snapshots

Germany: Telekom, Vodafone, O2 Telefónica and 1&1, with cable, DSL and expanding fibre. France: Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Free compete hard on fibre “box” bundles. Spain: one of Europe’s most fibre-rich countries, with Movistar, MasOrange, Vodafone and DIGI. Italy: TIM, Iliad, WindTre and Fastweb + Vodafone. Netherlands: KPN, VodafoneZiggo and Odido. Ireland: eir, Vodafone, Three and Virgin Media.

Moving to or within Europe

  • You may need a local address, ID and bank account to sign a contract; prepaid SIMs are simpler but may need ID registration.
  • Fibre installs can take weeks in some countries. Order early.
  • Each country has a telecoms regulator that publishes coverage maps and complaint routes.

Visiting from the UK

Since Brexit, UK mobile plans aren’t covered by EU roaming rules. Many UK networks charge a daily fee in Europe or include roaming only on certain plans. Check before you travel. See our roaming guide.

Frequently asked questions

Do EU roaming rules apply to UK SIMs?
No. The UK left the EU roaming scheme. Some UK plans still include EU roaming, but many charge a daily fee.
Can I use an EU SIM permanently in another EU country?
Roam like at home is designed for periodic travel. Operators can apply fair use limits if you mainly use your SIM abroad for a long period.
