What is the digital landline switchover?
The traditional phone network (PSTN) is being retired. Providers are moving customers to digital voice, where calls travel over a broadband connection. The industry deadline for completing the switchover is 31 January 2027. Your provider will contact you before you’re moved. Read our full switchover guide.
Who needs to take extra care
- People who use telecare or personal alarms. Under the industry’s telecare charter, providers should identify these users and check devices work before and after switching.
- Homes with security or fire alarms, lift lines or other devices that dial out over the phone line.
- People who rely on the landline in a power cut or have no mobile signal at home.
Tell your provider if you or someone you care for depends on the landline. They should offer support such as a battery back-up unit.
Landline-only and phone-and-broadband deals
If you only want a phone line, ask providers about landline-only digital voice packages, which some offer for customers who don’t use the internet. If you have broadband, compare whether a phone line adds anything you need: many people now use a mobile for calls instead.
Avoid switchover scams
Scammers have phoned people claiming they must pay to “keep” their landline. Your provider won’t pressure you into paying on a cold call. If in doubt, hang up and call your provider on the number on your bill.
