Broadband guide

Broadband options for rural homes

If your phone line can only manage a few megabits, you’re not stuck. Mobile home broadband, satellite and community fibre schemes can all transform a slow rural connection.

4G and 5G home broadband

A plug-in router with a SIM card connects to the nearest mobile mast. It’s quick to set up and no line is needed. Speeds depend on signal strength and how busy the mast is. An external antenna can help. Check coverage for your exact address and look for plans with a short contract or a trial period.

Satellite internet

Low-orbit satellite services such as Starlink deliver much faster speeds and lower latency than older satellite broadband, and work almost anywhere with a clear view of the sky. You buy or rent a dish and router. Weather and obstructions like trees can affect performance.

Your right to request decent broadband (UK)

Under the UK’s broadband Universal Service Obligation, you can request a connection of at least 10 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload if you can’t get one, subject to a cost limit. Requests go to BT (or KCOM in the Hull area). Government schemes such as Project Gigabit and gigabit vouchers are also extending full fibre to rural areas.

In the US

Rural Americans can compare fixed wireless, 5G home internet and satellite. Check the FCC National Broadband Map for providers at your address, and ask your state broadband office about local build-out programs.

Frequently asked questions

Is 5G home broadband as good as fibre?
It can be fast where 5G signal is strong, but it’s less consistent than fibre, especially at busy times. It’s a strong option where fibre isn’t available.
Does Starlink work in the UK?
Yes. Starlink sells residential service in the UK, the US and much of Europe. Check availability for your address on its website.
